Preview & Prediction:
The Broncos are 11-2 and in the AFC West driver’s seat after clinching a playoff spot and putting up a season high 551 yards in Sunday’s 51-28 win over Tennessee. Their 1,086 offensive yards in the last two weeks is their best two-game stretch of the season. The San Diego Chargers on the other hand have their slim playoff chances hinging on containing Peyton Manning in Denver where they haven’t lost all season. At 6-7 following Sunday’s 37-14 win against the New York Giants at home, the Chargers don’t have any room for error in their final three games. With that being said, their chances of containing this passing attack are slim to none as well, the Chargers are allowing almost 400 yards of offense and are not one of the better in the league. Peyton Manning will set the NFL single season touch down record with another four touchdown game, which isn’t unrealistic. He will have to do so without all star wide receiver West Welker who is doubtful after leaving last weekend’s game with a concussion. The Broncos, however, have relied on plenty of weapons this season and losing Welker shouldn’t keep them from moving the ball effectively. Tight end Julius Thomas returned from a two game knee injury and scored his 11th touchdown of the season, leading the team. The Broncos have also won four straight against San Diego including a 28-20 win against the Chargers on November 10th when San Diego held the Broncos to a season low 297 yards of offense. San Diego’s win against the Giants last week was their best offensive output this season, albeit against a very questionable Giants defense. Denver might be in a bit of a letdown spot after securing a playoff spot last weekend but playing this game at home against a very mediocre defense like San Diego, they should simply outscore the Chargers and win this game going away.
The 2013 season has been kind to the Denver Broncos. Although they aren’t yet considered the best team in the NFL even with a 11-2. Denver is, however, easily the best team in the AFC this season. Peyton Manning is having the best season of his career despite his age approaching 40. Manning is on pace to break the passing touchdowns record in 2013, posting 45 touchdown passes to go along with 4,522 yards. In fact, he’s on pace to break both the passing yards and passing touchdowns records for a single season. Demaryius Thomas is quickly turning into one of the best receivers in the league, catching 74 passes for 1,149 yards and 11 touchdowns — leading the team in all three categories. Knowshon Moreno leads the run game with 920 yards and 10 touchdowns while Montee Ball has 456 yards and four scores. Cold? Who gives a rip about the cold? QB Peyton Manning shook off some criticism of his past play in cold weather last week, throwing for almost 400 yards and four touchdowns, with nary an interception in 59 attempts, in Denver's 51-28 victory over Tennessee. The Broncos are simply very difficult to stop. They still lead the league in yardage and scoring and, if they need to, they can bang the ball with Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball. They're a defense's worst nightmare. The Odds Shark computer is calling for a Broncos victory but a San Diego cover in a game that plays OVER its total. But San Diego will have to play one of its best games of the year to hang with the Broncos. Rivers has been absolutely great, and Chargers head coach Mike McCoy might have some insight as to how to slow down Manning and Co.
Denver has proven it can cover big numbers. Take the points with the Broncos, and pay attention to the OVER also.
Key Trends:
OVER is 12-2-1 past 15 games when San Diego is road underdog.
OVER is 10-1-1 past 12 Denver home games.
OVER is 8-0-1 past nine times Broncos home as double-digit favorites.
Denver is 5-0-1 against the spread against the AFC West, 5-1 against the spread in their last six games, and 7-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record.
San Diego is 1-8-1 against the spread following a win, 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 0-5 against the spread following a win by 14 or more points.
Predicted Score: San Diego Chargers 27, Denver Broncos 38.
